The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Developer to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Feedback

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer stated that the team is now refining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full message from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a sharper identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our fans.

The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of the team. Following a period of talks, he officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

Background of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a early access event. Initially, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Face the competition with unique powers, risks, and challenges that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and pray your squad can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

The game has not yet received an announced launch window or supported systems, but players can anticipate further news as creation advances.
